After Digitization AI is high on the union governments agenda

The government at center  has always been pro-digitization and has been willing to try new avenues of getting the masses out to try modern technical advances for their day to day lives. One of the latest among these advancements that the government is eyeing the the use of artificial intelligence.

While professing about Artificial Intelligence earlier this year, PM Modi had mentioned,

'œThe march of technology cannot be at the expense of further increasing the difference between societies over access to technology. The evolution of technology has to be rooted in the ethic of '˜Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikaas'.'

Government has been urging  the Indian startup ecosystem stakeholders, teachers, and students to build artificial intelligence solutions that are '˜Made to work for India'. He further believes that AI can be utilised to eradicate poverty and disease, and by doing so, prosperity can be brought to the poor and underprivileged sections.

To begin with,  towards streamlining the artificial intelligence utilisation in the country, the Task Force constituted by Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India has recently released its report on the adoption of AI in India.

The key areas on which this task force will be working are:

  1. Focusing on the areas where AI can prove tremendously useful and these include  Manufacturing, Fintech, Healthcare, agriculture/ food processing, retail/ customer engagement, Aid for Differently Abled/Accessibility Technology, public utility services, education and national security.
  2. Work towards  collecting, validating, standardizing, correlating, archiving and distributing AI-relevant data and making it accessible to organizations, people and systems without compromising privacy and ethics.
  3. Government policies to be framed around corporate stakeholders, educational and legal institutions.
  4. Strong IP mechanisms are required to encourage and protect innovations in AI
  5. Improving manufacturing, especially in the SME (small and medium-sized enterprises) sector; improving healthcare quality; improving agriculture yields; and improving delivery of public services.
  6. Retaining the competitive edge in many areas of manufacturing and services, thus preventing the future loss of jobs.

As per the Task Force Report,

'œThese are the areas where the Indian government must focus to play a prominent role. If implemented well, these guidelines pertaining to different sectors can certainly lead to an improved quality of life for the Indian citizens as well as generate employment and growth,'

The government-run think tank NITI Aayog will be launching a national programme, aimed towards facilitating research in artificial intelligence-related areas. Furthermore, the programme will be focusing towards developing new applications of the AI technology.
